The Manciple is a steward for a law school, one of the Inns, or a dormitory for the lawyers. He is in charge of purchasing the food for his masters. Although he is not an educated man, he is so shrewd that he can deceive the learned scholars and has been able to gain a considerable sum for himself by his little frauds.
