Chaucer, the pilgrim, should not be confused with Chaucer, the author, or Chaucer, the real person. In the General Prologue. Chaucer, the Pilgrim, is associated with the last five pilgrims, the so-called 'rogues-group'. Later Chaucer, the author, lets Chaucer, the pilgrim, tell two more or less successful stories.
