This is the story of Constance, daughter of the Emperor of Rome, who is married to the Sultan of Syria, who promises to become a Christian. At the instigation of the Sultan's mother Constance is cast upon the sea in a sailing vessel eventually landing in Northumberland at King Alla's court, whom she weds. Again she is expelled on the sea because of treachery of the King's mother. This time she returns to Rome. After many complications the family is reunited in Rome and returns to Northumbria. After the king dies Constance returns to Rome where her son Maurice becomes Emperor. The well-known Constance legend is also treated in John Gower's Confessio Amantis and the verse romance Emaré.
