The Friar tells a tale about a corrupt summoner who blackmails the parishioners of the diocese. One day he meets the devil disguised as a young yeoman dressed in green. Although the yeoman introduces himself as a fiend, the summoner makes a bargain with him to share what they are given. They meet a carter who wishes his horse to the devil, but the fiend does not accept it, because - as he explains - the wish came not from the heart. Then they visit an old widow from whom the summoner demands twelve pence and her frying pan. She wishes the summoner and the pan to hell. The fiend asks her if her wish was sincere. She says yes and the fiend immediately takes the summoner to hell to the special place provided for him and his companions.
