Pieter Breugel
the Elder
The Flemish Proverbs
(1559) |
This painting presents proverbs popular in the 15th/16th
centuries. Over one hundred proverbs have been identified, although the exact
number is uncertain as some of the characters and details may show more than
one proverb. The painting was much admired, so Pieter Brueghel the Younger copied
it like many other paintings of his father's. |
