"The Painter and the Buyer"
Pieter Bruegel (c.1525-1569)

Pieter Breugel the Elder

The Flemish Proverbs

(1559)

"Wrap in a blue cloak"
= deceive someone

This painting presents proverbs popular in the 15th/16th centuries. Over one hundred proverbs have been identified, although the exact number is uncertain as some of the characters and details may show more than one proverb. The painting was much admired, so Pieter Brueghel the Younger copied it like many other paintings of his father's.
